 Taidenäyttelyn jälkeen alkoivat Suomi-koulun olympialaiset.

The Finnish school olympic games began after the art show.

Eri maiden joukkueet marssivat esiin musiikin tahdissa ja aplodien raikuessa. Kisat aloitettiin mahtavasti kajauttamalla Maamme-laulu Suomen lipun liehuessa ja olympiasoihdun välkkyessä. Urheilijat ja osanottajat vannoivat yhdessä valan, jossa he lupasivat noudattaa olympia-aatteen sääntöjä ja pidättäytyä käyttämästä dopingia.

Teams from various countries marched out to music and wild applause. The games began with a wonderful rendition of Maamme, the Finnish national anthem, while the Finnish flag waved and the olympic torch shone its light. The athletes and participants swore an olympic oath, wherein they promised to observe the rules of the olympic spirit and to not use any performance enhancers.

Ensimmäisenä kilpailemassa oli Jennimaan joukkue hularengasohjelmallaan. Varmoina treenauksen kovista tuloksista he haastoivat vanhempansa hulaviestiin.

First to compete was Jennimaa's team with their hula hoop program. Sure of the results of their extensive training they challenged their parents to a hula hoop relay. 

Seuraavana vuorossa oli Tarumaa hernepussiheittokisallaan. Pussit tuli heittää olympiarenkaiden läpi juhlavassa kaaressa. Urheilijat onnistuivat koitoksessaan.

Next up was Tarumaa's competitors in the pea bag throwing event. The bags were to be thrown through the olympic rings in a majestic arch. The event was a great success.

Lastenkantokisan osanottajien sprinttityylissä oli kaikki-tai-ei-mitään meininkiä.

The child carrying contestants showed an "all-or-nothing" spirit in their sprint.

Päivän viimeinen laji oli parijuoksu. Tässä piti olla tarkkana siitä, mitkä jalat on sidottu yhteen, jotta kasvot osoittaisivat molemmilla menosuuntaan.

The last event of the day was couples' run. Competitors had to make sure that the correct legs were tied together to make sure they'd face the same direction while running.

Päivä päättyi Suvivirteen sekä kiitoksiin, joita annettiin sekä opettajille, vapaaehtoisille että johtokuntatiimistä lähteville jäsenille. Auringon paisteessa nautittiin piknikistä vielä ennen vuosittaista johtokunnan kokousta.

The day ended with Suvivirsi and thanks to all teachers, volunteers and the members who are leaving the school board. As the sun shone on, families enjoyed the picnic before the board's annual meeting.

Jokainen lapsi sai vuoden suorituksestaan palkkiona mitalin.

Each child received a medal for their activity at the Finnish school.

Kouluvuosi on taas päätöksessä, ja Suomi-koulu kiittää kaikkia vanhempia, lapsia, vapaaehtoisia ja sponsoreita huikeasta kuluneesta kouluvuodesta! Rekisteröinti on jo alkanut ensi vuodelle, ja ryhmät täyttyvät nopeasti, joten muistakaa ilmoittautua piakkoin.

The school year has, once again, ended, and the Finnish school would like to thank all the parents, children, sponsors and volunteers for the successful past year! Registration for the next school year has already begun: groups fill up quickly, so remember to sign up soon.

Kevätjuhla alkoi jo tuttuun tapaan taidenäyttelyllä, johon lapset olivat taideope-Jaanan avustuksella valmistelleet upeita teoksia.

The spring celebration began traditionally with the art show, to which children had prepared wonderful works of art with the guidance of art teacher Jaana.

Taidenäyttelyn viiri toivotti katsojat tervetulleiksi.

Torstairyhmäkin pääsi viettämään äitienpäivää, aivan kuten lauantailaiset. Askartelun aihe oli sama: kukkamaljakko, jonka sai koristella värikkäillä papereilla mieleisekseen ja täyttää ihanilla kukkasilla.

Thursday group had a chance to celebrate Mothers day as well, just like the groups on Saturday. The art project was the same: take a vase, decorate it with colorful papers to your liking, and fill it with wonderful flowers.

Hassu tapaus sattui, kun lauantaikerralta tutut peurat saapuivat hämmästelyn aiheiksi! Tällä kertaa lapsia hieman pelotti: mitä jos peurat tulevat sisälle? Onneksi ne kuitenkin pysyivät ulkona, hyvin maastoutuneina.

A funny event happened when the deer familiar from the Saturday school day appeared again to be admired at. This time around, children were a bit frightened by them: what if the deer decide to come indoors? Luckily they remained outsided, nicely camouflaged.

Happy Mothers Day once more, mothers!

 Vanhan tutun laulun mukaan "toukokuun toinen sunnuntai on äidin", mutta Suomi-koululla äitienpäivää vietettiin viikkoa aiemmin, jotta lauantaikerran lapset pääsisivät viettämään juhlaa äitiensä kanssa.

As the old, familiar Finnish song says, "the second Sunday of May is Mother's", but the day was celebrated already a week earlier at the Finnish school to make sure that children from Saturday school had a chance to celebrate with their mothers at school.

Äitejä oli pyydetty tuomaan mukanaan lapselle lasimaljakko, joita koristeltiin hienosti Jaanan avustuksella.

The mothers were asked to bring a glass vase for their child to decorate wonderfully with the guidance of Jaana.

Lapset saivat valita kukkakimpun maljakkoon, ja ojentaa koko teoksen äidille.

Children selected a bunch of flowers for their vases, and they handed the art creations to their mothers.

Lopuksi saatiin nauttia maukkaasta äitienpäiväkakusta ja kahvittelusta ennen normaalin koulupäivän jatkumista. 

Finally, everyone enjoyed the delicious Mother's day cake and coffee before continuing with the regular school day.

Lauantaikertoina aiheena ovat olleet, kuten lähitorstaina, ammatit. Ensin vanhimpien lasten ryhmä keskusteli toiveammateistaan. Tässä muutamia otteita:

Saturday sessions have been spent with professions, like the recent Thursday sessions. First the oldest children discussed their dream occupations. Here are some examples:

skeittaaja - professional skate boarder

tenniksenpelaaja - tennis player

laulaja - singer

koirien geenitutkija - dog gene researcher

hammaslääkäri - dentist

maanviljelijä - farmer

opettaja - teacher

ja ylivoimaisesti suosituin ammatti, jonka kaikki lapset mainitsivat listallaan:

Tutkimuksen kohde oli vielä monella avoinna. The object of research was still open for many.

Nämä valinnat tuntuvat noudattavan maailmanlaajuisia trendejä: Suomessakin 2000-luvulla tehtyjen tutkimuksien mukaan vanhan suosituimman ammatin, opettajan, on syrjäyttänyt laulajan tai ammatilaisurheilijan ammatti, tai yleisesti jonkinasteisena kuuluisuutena oleminen, mikä johtuu ehkäpä Idolsien ja olympialaisten suosion myötä.

These choices seem to reflect world-wide trends: Finnish research in the 2000s on children's favorite occupations showed that the old favorite occupation, teacher, has been replaced by the occupation of a singer, a professional athlete, or being a celebrity in general, which possibly reflects the popularity of American/Finnish Idols competitions and the olympics.

Olympialaisista puheenollen, viime lauantaina lapset alkoivat valmistella myös kevätjuhlaan, jonka teemana on olympialaiset.

Speaking of the olympics, last Saturday children began to prepare for the spring celebration. Its theme will be the olympics.

Often our blog posts begin with "the day was full of activities!" - here is the end result of an activity-filled day. Finnish school also grants the licence to relax.

Tänään olikin jännittävä päivä, sillä Suomi-koulu sai vierailijan! Laura H. tuli puhumaan ammatistaan univormuun pukeutuneena, ja pian lapset oppivatkin kaikennäköistä lentäjän ammatista: millaisia erilaisia lentokoneita on olemassa (suihkumoottorit ja potkurikoneet)...

Today was an exciting day, because the Finnish school had a visitor! Laura H. came to talk about her profession dressed up in a uniform, and soon the children learned all sorts of things about being a pilot: what different kinds of planes there are (equipped with jet engines or propellers)...

Myös kuulokkeita esiteltiin, sekä vanhan ajan suojalaseja ja lentäjän päähinettä.

Also the pilot's headphones were displayed, as well as old-style goggles and headgear.

Lapset saivat myös itse kokeilla, miltä tuntuu olla lentäjä.

Lopputunnista luokkalaiset puhuivat siitä, millä tapaa he ovat fyysisesti erilaisia. Vertailtiin pituuksia, silmien sekä hiusten väriä. Tyttöjen ja poikienkin eroavaisuuksista tuli puhetta. Tosin kun opettaja asetteli tytön ja pojan vierekkäin, ja kysyi, mitä eroja teidän välillänne on, poika osoitti tytön nenää ja sanoi "Tuolta ainakin valuu räkä". Noh, ero mikä ero!

At the end of the lesson the children talked about how they are physically different from each other. Heights and eye and hair color were compared. Also there was some talk about differences between boys and girls. However, when the teacher set a boy and a girl to stand next to each other and asked, whether the boy could say how the two of them are different, the boy pointed at the girl's nose, saying "Well, snot is coming out of there." Well, that's a difference too!

Talvisäiden muuttuessa kevääksi Suomi-koulullakin keskusteltiin vuodenaikojen vaihdosta. Yksi hyvin näkyvä merkki on eläinten turkin värin vaihtuminen kauden mukaan, jotta ne olisivat huomaamattomampia ympäristössä. Hauska yhteensattuma olikin, kun asiasta keskusteltaessa peuraperhe saapui Suomi-koulun ikkunan taakse kuin antamaan elävän elämän esimerkin!

As Winter weathers change into Spring, the Finnish school also took up the topic of changing seasons. One very visible example is how the coats of animals change depending on the season so that they could better camouflage themselves in their environment. What a fun coincidence it then was when a family of deer appeared right behind the Finnish school window as this topic was discussed - as if to give a real-life example to the children!

Lapset tarkkailevat peuroja, jotka ovatkin hankala huomata keväistä metsää vasten. Bongaatko sinä peurat?

Children are looking at the deer, who are indeed very difficult to spot against the Spring forest. Can you spot the deer?

Tässä myös maistiaisia viime lauantain opetustuokiosta, jolloin kyseessä oli Ä-kirjain. Mitäköhän kirjainta käsitellään tällä viikolla?

Here is also an example of last Saturday's teaching, when the letter Ä was handled. Wonder what letter will be up on the board this week?

Torstain ryhmä puuhaili innostuneena pääsiästouhujen parissa.

The Thursday group busied itself excitedly with Easter-related activities.

Amerikkalaiseen pääsiäisperinteeseen kuuluu egg hunt eli pääsiäismunien metsästys. Suomikoululaiset metsästivät munia leikkivarjoleikin avulla.

Among the American Easter traditions is the egg hunt. Finnish school children hunted the egss with the help of a rainbow parachute game.

Miten hienosti värikkäät munat päätyivätkään oikeiden värejen kohdalle. Seuraavaksi oli vuorossa golf-leikki - munat kieriteltiin varjon aukosta sen alla olevaan koriin.

How marvellously the colorful eggs ended up with their corresponding colors! Next up was a golf game - the eggs were rolled from the parachute hole to the basket below.

Lopulta lapset pääsivät varjon alle poimimaan korista itselleen pääsiäismunan ja saalista esiteltiin varjon piilosta muille. Keksipä joku lapsi esitellä varjon suojista kahtakin saaliikseen saamaa munaa.

In the end, the children went under the parachute to pick an Easter egg for themselves from the basket, and the mighty catch was displayed to the others from hiding. Someone even came up with the idea to show two of the caught eggs from beneath the parachute.

Nämä tipuset seurasivat innoissaa ryhmän toimintaa. Erityisen hauskaa tipuista oli nähdän ryhmän esittävän upeaa tiputanssia!

These little chicks were following the group's activities. They especially enjoyed the group's performance of the Chicken Dance!

Torstain koulukerta keskusteli ammateista aivan kuten ryhmäläiset lauantaina. Tällä kertaa lapset saivat pukeutua erilaisten ammattien edustajiksi!

Thursday's group talked about occupations like the Saturday group kids. This time, children dressed up members of various occupations!

Occupations and modes of transportation were learned quickly: when teacher Airi asked what kinds of signs of spring the children have already seen, they answered "traffic signs!"

Kalevalan päivä on suomalaisen kulttuurin juhlistamisen päivä. Seattlessa Finnish Choral Society järjesti sen tänä vuonna 34. kerran, eli tapahtumalla on pitkät perinteet myös täällä. Yleensä Kalevalan päivää on vietetty Nordic Heritage Museumilla, mutta tänä vuonna kuorolaiset kutsuttiin vierailemaan Suomi-koulullamme koulupäivän aluksi.

Kalevala day, or the Day of Finnish culture, was organized for the 34th time in Seattle by the Finnish Choral Society. Thus, the event has a long tradition here! Usually the Kalevala day has been celebrated at the Nordic Heritage Museum, but this year the Choral Society was invited  to our Finnish school to visit at the beginning of our school day.

Suomalaisten kansallispukujen esittelyä. Lapsille esitettiin kysymys: mitä eroja on vasemmalla puolella olevien karjalaisten ja oikealla puolella olevien länsirannikon pukujen välillä?

Introduction of Finnish folk costumes. The following question was posed to children: what differences can you spot between the costumes to the left (Carelian costumes) and to the right (West coast costumes)?

Kuoro esitti hauskoja suomalaisia kansanlauluja, kuten "Minun kultani kaunis on (vaik on kaitaluinen)"

The choir performed fun Finnish folk songs, such as "My Darling is Beautiful (although she's just skin and bone)".

Myös lapset pääsivät esiintymään! Tässä esitetään Punaisen mökin tarinaa.

The children also had a chance to perform! Here a story about a Red cabin is sung.

Lasten kaksi kanteleryhmää esiintyivät myös: tässä menossa klassikko "Konkkis".

The children's two kantele groups also performed: here the classic children's rhyme "Konkkis" is performed.

Vanhempi kanteleryhmä soitti ja esitti perinteisen piirileikin:

"Näin sitä leikkiä leikitään / pari viedään toisiltaan.

Tule tule tänne vaan / vierelleni seisomaan."

The kantele group for older children played and performed a traditional song in the round.

"This is how you play this game / you take a pair from one another.

Come, come bravely over here / to stand right by my side."

Kuoro oli tuonut mukanaan oman, hienon kanteleen.

The choir had brought along their beautiful kantele.

Tunnin kestänyt juhla päättyi hienoon seisovaan pöytään, jonka kuorolaiset järjestivät yhdessä Suomi-koulun kanssa. Tarjolla oli perinteistä pullaa, korvapuustia, graavilohileipiä, sekä tietenkin karjalanpiirakoita. Nam!

The 1-hour long festivities ended with a wonderful buffet that the Choral society had arranged together with the Finnish school. Among the goodies were traditional pulla, cinnamon rolls, open-faced lox on rye, and naturally Karelian pies. Yum!

Sillä välin kun aikuiset nauttivat pöydän antimista, lapset jatkoivat normaalia koulupäiväänsä (lounastauolla hekin pääsivät pöytään). Tässä ryhmä leikkii ulkona hyvin perinteistä Tervapataa. Mikä ihana ilma suosi meitä!

While the adults were enjoying the goods from the buffet, the children continued their regular school day (they could enjoy the buffet during their lunch break). Here a group is playing the very traditional game, which has become a huge hit at the Finnish school: tervapata (the tar pot). What wonderful weather we had, too!
